第二部分:阅读理解

Passage1

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it isfor a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose issettled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is tofind it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walkinto a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it instock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it onproceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed inless than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction.

For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not havewhat he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case thesalesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else—he offers the nearest he can to thearticle required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; hedoes so with skill and polish: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, butwould you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with thistreatment, and the usual response is:“This is the right colour and may be the right size, butI should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”

Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost everyrespect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based onneed. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”.She is always open to persuasion;indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by whatcompanions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in hermind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her.Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value whenthey buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain.Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going fromone rail to another, to and often retracing (折回) her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants totry on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dressshops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

Otherstudies show that laughter might be helpful for people in hospitals. Anorganization called Rx Laughter carried out a study about humor in thehospital. The results suggest that laughter might help children deal withpainful medical treatments.

Guess what happened? The kids were able to withstandpain for a longer period of time when they were watching a funny video thanwhen watching no video. Those who laughed more felt less pain.

“Thismeans that humor can keep you away from thinking about a painful process andthus make it seem less painful,” says Dr. Margaret Stuber, the main researcherfor the study. She works at the University of California at Los Angeles. AsStuber also points out, humor may even be good for your emotional healthbecause physical and emotional health is connected. “If you can say to yourselfthat a medical treatment wasn't as bad as you thought it would be, then you'reless likely to have nightmares, fears about going to the doctor, and otherrelated anxieties,” she says.

Passage 4

Dr. Mary Jo Bane is the associate director of the Center forResearch on Women. Her recent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments tofamily life”, which cast doubt on some common mythsabout American family.

Myth 1: The American Family is DyingBecause of the Soaring Divorce Rate.

According to Dr. Bane’s study, theAmerican family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorcerate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriagehas never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a largeproportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specificsituation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.

Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroyingthe Family by Neglecting Their Children.

“There’s no evidence that children receiveless attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers workinginside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time intodifferent categories: simple physical function and educational time ordevelopment time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen theamount of educational or development time very much, whether or not the motherworks outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence thatworking mothers, especially in the middle class, try to compensate for workingby setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their childrenand spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane.
